Following the command to love God completely is the second command to love people. Jesus forces a spiritual love of God to express itself in the world around us. Filled with grit, covered by the stench of this world, with calloused hands and a humble heart, our love of God should be expressed in our love for people. If we, as the people of God, claim to have love for God, yet do not show love for others, our faith is inauthentic, fake, or an imitation. In this passage Jesus forces us to consider that the proper expression of the love of God is not a monastic retreat from the world but rather incarnation into the lives of those around us, reflecting the love of God.
