Paul uses these verses to help draw a contrast between the people of the world and the people of God. For those who are in Christ, a life lived in the flesh is not an option. We have not learned Christ in this way. Our lives should be marked by a clear distinction from the unbelieving world. We are called to lay aside the old self like an old tainted garment, to be renewed in our minds by the word of God, and to put on the new self, which is "like God." This process of laying aside, being renewed and putting on the new self marks the Christian experience. Paul then gives practical examples of what a life lived for the Lord looks like.
