The church at Thessalonica was persecuted from the very beginning. Paul traveled there with Silas and Timothy on his second missionary journey, and Jews and Greeks, men and women, responded to the gospel. But it didn’t take long before some jealous Jews formed a mob and ran Paul out of the city. Though the Thessalonian believers were new in their faith, they had the marks of true believers and did not abandon their faith. Paul wrote to this church with the love of a caring father to encourage them to hold fast and persevere as they lived each day in light of Christ’s return.
