This passage serves as one of the most significant pivot points in the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. Following the first official plot by the religious leaders to kill Jesus, the clock begins ticking towards His inevitable journey to the cross. With this in mind, Jesus now calls forth twelve men who will form the foundation of a new community, known as the church. In this text we'll see what this new community is all about, why these particular men were chosen, and what the implications are for us, as fellow members of this new community.
