I have never felt more stretched spiritually, emotionally or physically than I have on this Exposure Trip. I would try to relax in my room at night and think about how exhausted I was. It would have been easier to stay home and be comfortable. Yet, God reminded me every day that even though it was a difficult transition from the norm, it was more than worth it to show God’s love for these kids who have not been shown a lot of love or encouragement.
It was hard to not get discouraged with the language barrier. I felt like I was on mute when trying to communicate with the children. What God taught me during our trip is that love is not just verbal. Love is also about actions, and we were able to show God’s love for these children in many different ways. Love was shown by constant hugs, high fives when one of our kids made a goal during a game, and even something as simple as pushing a child on a swing. God showed me that love is about being selfless. All the tiredness, emotional challenges, and hard transition of living in an orphanage was all worth it when I saw my kids' smiles after service every night.
I know God used all of our team’s unique abilities and personalities to show God’s love and grace to the children at the orphanage. Language wasn’t a challenge once I learned that it was more important to be present and supportive toward the children after they heard the gospel.
I grew attached to my seventh graders, and we bonded as a team and a family for a short time. I was able to show them what love looks like, and I know God used this time to make an eternal difference in the lives of the children. I wouldn’t take back the experience, even the hard times, for anything. This trip taught me so much, and I am so glad I went and was stretched all for the love of others.
