Our team took a walking tour with our hosts The Gilmores, from the town of Pignon today. This was in an effort to get a better understanding of the lay of the town and get some sense of the daily life for Haitians in this part of the country. We set out on our journey and were met by people with a wave and a smile. The mainstreet in Pignon had many motorcycle taxis that would, for the right price, take us to our desired destination. I think I saw in some instances two or sometimes three people being transported through the streets at insane speeds. One young man pleaded with us to use his taxi services and when we declined, he insisted that he would be willing to do anything even for minimal compensation.
There were men constructing walls with shovels and buckets using hand labor. There was an enterprising young boy that had folded some aluminum into what appeared to be an origami shape and was willing to part with it for a dollar. We came upon a giant pig rummaging through garbage on a street corner, it made no notice of us. We saw many small street side shops and were given the American store reference like Home Depot or Napa Auto Parts.
In some ways much is the same but in other ways things are very much different. I’m thankful for God's love that extends and transcends into every culture. That Jesus comes to remedy our very basic needs and those of the Haitians despite the differences on the surface. We live in a world that is not as it should be in both places, but he comes in love to save the whole world from the sin that separates us from the Father. He is the same both here and back at home.
