Due to a lack of understanding in their eschatology, the Thessalonians were discouraged and possibly even immobilized in their faith as additional grief set in after the death of one or more of their members. Paul educates them on the mission of believers who are still on earth as well as the eventual return of Christ and resurrection of the dead, giving them necessary hope.
