With disruptions being so prevalent in the church of Corinth, the Apostle Paul concludes his reprimand of these profoundly spiritual, yet misguided Christians with a final word to the women in the church. Inevitably controversial, Paul tells women to be silent in the church, which can either be viewed as a sexist ploy from a bigot or a simple, earnest command in light of the cultural concerns within the church. Closer study of the passage will bring to light a connection between speaking in tongues, prophecy, and the command for silence within the church. With verses 33 and 40 as bookends for the concept of peace and order, Paul’s desire, as always, is to ensure unity and focus within the church.
