When Jesus talks of suffering and what He's going to endure, the disciples don’t quite get the concept of endurance. Yet with a righted view of Jesus and the Spirit empowering them, there's an understanding that they’re worthy to suffer for His name. Paul says we are heirs of God, fellow heirs with Christ – if indeed we suffer. In a sense, the trials and difficulties we endure in our lives are an apologetic for our faith in God. They are a defense or proof of the fact that we serve God, because we are willing to endure and able to endure suffering. The commitment level of an intellectual faith says we believe in Jesus as long as it doesn’t cost us too much. Shifting to a heart transformation belief in Jesus means we will follow Him wherever and at whatever cost.
